The Art of Negotiation

Negotiation is all about creating relationships. The ability to negotiate is absolutely critical within day-to-day business activities. We are taught to be nice and say yes to everyone if we want to be liked but that will not earn you the respect needed to take care of business.

Negotiation is a give and take process. A successful negotiation will result in a win-win situation for both parties. If you are courteous, both parties should leave satisfied and excited to do business again in the future.

Here are some things you should take into account while negotiating:

  • Truly understand what the opposite party wants and what you can bring to the table. If you can offer something that they care very much about and you care very little about then discuss your options for each side.
  • Do not get emotionally attached to the situation. If you begin to take this process personally then you are more likely to come off aggressive when things are not going your way. Nobody wants to work with a bully and you ultimately might scare them away.
  • Know what you're fighting for! Don't negotiate just for the heck of it. Go into this process with a goal and a plan to achieve that. You will know exactly what to push for and when to back off to avoid taking advantage of the opposite party.
Negotiating plays an essential role in the booking process because ultimately you are the one paying for the talent. If you do not feel comfortable or feel someone is worth what is being requested then it is the booking managers job to put their foot down and confer other options.
